Turkey - Izmir, Ankara and Thessaloniki
by Mike Levy
New direct services from Stansted Airport to Thessaloniki, Izmir and Ankara will start this summer. This brings three lively, historically important cities within easy short break reach of Cambridge. Thessaloniki (Salonika of old) looks the juciest – it is a city where once Jews, Muslims and Christians lived side by side in relative harmony. Izmir – at first glance a rather dowdy port city in Turkey – is the gateway to wonderful Ottoman treasures and Ankara – never likely to win any beauty competitions – is the nation’s cosmopolitan capital surrounded by lofty mountains and more off the tracks than you can beat in a lifetime. The carriers are Ryanair for Thessaloniki, Pegasus Airlines for Izmir and Anadolu Jet for Ankara. If you go, why not write us a short piece – you’ve always wanted to be a travel writer, now’s your chance. Contact mike@goyourownway.info
